HomeworldLore

HomeworldLore.net is a growing archive of written material connected to the Homeworld universe: official lore, community-created fiction, historical material and documents that deserve somewhere more permanent than an abandoned forum or forgotten hard drive.

The current site runs on BookStack, but the platform should be regarded as an experiment rather than a final solution. It works well for organising books, chapters and pages, but I am still evaluating whether its structure, presentation and long-term.

Some things are worth keeping readable

Over more than twenty years the Homeworld community has produced an enormous amount of writing. Some came from the games themselves and their manuals, while much more appeared on fan sites, forums, modding communities and personal websites.

The problem is familiar by now: websites disappear, forums become read-only, links stop working and material that once seemed permanently available slowly vanishes from the web.

HomeworldLore exists to give some of that material a more structured home. Rather than simply storing files, the aim is to keep the material readable, searchable and organised enough that somebody can actually find it again.

Lore, fiction and community history

The archive contains material from several different parts of the Homeworld universe. There are sections for lore relating to the individual games, collections of fan fiction, community-created factions and characters, and larger bodies of work that developed around long-running Homeworld projects.

Among those are preserved writings from Kiith Iopia, material connected to Point Defense Systems (PDS), and other community works that were originally published elsewhere many years ago.

Not everything on the site is canon, and it is not intended to be. Part of the value lies precisely in keeping official material, community interpretation and fan-created history identifiable without pretending that they are the same thing.

Why BookStack?

HomeworldLore is built on BookStack rather than a conventional blog or gallery platform. That gives the material a natural hierarchy of books, chapters and pages, which suits long-form lore and fiction considerably better than a chronological stream of posts.

It also makes attribution and preservation easier. Where possible, material can retain information about its original source, author, publication date and where it was recovered from rather than becoming anonymous text copied from one site to another.

An archive that is still being built

Platform: BookStack
Type: Lore and community writing archive
Content: Official lore, fan fiction and historical community material
Coverage: Multiple Homeworld games and community projects
Focus: Preservation, organisation and attribution
Status: Active development

HomeworldLore is deliberately a work in progress. There is considerably more material worth preserving than there is time to catalogue it, and old documents rarely arrive neatly labelled and ready to publish.

That makes the project partly archival and partly investigative: establish what something is, where it came from, who created it if that can still be determined, and then put it somewhere that makes sense.

The finished archive may never really be finished. For this sort of project, that is probably the correct state.
